Last weekend our parish and all parishes and missions throughout our diocese took up a special collection to support  our priests’ retirement fund called “The St. Joseph Association.” To date, our parishioners have collectively raised $1,217.35. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY. This collection will help remedy the estimated $1.8 million shortfall in the St. Joseph Association. If you were unable to complete and return your envelope from the Diocese last Sunday, you may still do so. Just place your donation in an envelope marked “Priest Retirement Fund” and place it in the collection basket next Sunday.  Fr. George

 Dear People of God,

Have you ever heard of the Four Marks of the Church?  Our older parishioners most likely have heard about them but many of our younger (fifty and younger) ones have not.  The Four Marks of the Church are those characteristics or qualities of the Church which identify her as the true Church, belonging entirely to Christ and serves as His instrument of salvation in the world today.

The Catholic Church is: "One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic."  We pray these words in the Creed on Sundays.  Their meaning is:

"One" – members are united in one faith.  They believe the same things and receive the same sacraments.  They are united under the Pope.

"Holy" – The Church is God centered.  Her teachings and her worship are all of Christ and animated by the Holy Spirit.  Members are called to live holy, sacramental lives, close to the Father.

"Catholic" – The Church is for all peoples of all times and places.  The word "catholic" means "universal."  The Church teaches to all people the entire doctrine of Jesus Christ.

"Apostolic" – the Church teaches the true, unchangeable doctrine of Jesus, as taught in the apostolic era and handed down through the apostles' successors, the bishops.  The Bishops' authority is the same as that of the Apostles, to whom they trace their office of leadership.

May God Bless you

Fr. George

BISHOP’S NEW VISION FOR FAITH FORMATION AND EDUCATION: YOUTH MINISTRY:

Efforts are ongoing to build enthusiasm for Bishop Alexander Sample’s New Vision for Faith Formation and Education in the Diocese of Marquette. Look for an article in this weekend’s U.P. Catholic Newspaper, the 3rd in a 4-part series that details the general areas of the new vision. Also, you may check the diocese’s web page called “New Vision for the Diocese” at

www.dioceseofmarquette.org.

A Mary, Queen of Heaven Retreat will be offered at Marygrove Retreat Center May 16 – 18. These three days of prayer and reflection will be in honor of our Blessed Mother. The retreat will be based on Marian Apparitions beginning with Guadelupe, Lourdes, Knock, Fatima and the contemporary visitations of the 20th century. We are fortunate to have Fr. Paul Nomellini be the director for this retreat.

The Senior Citizens Retreat will be offered at Marygrove Retreat Center May 20 – 22. It emphasizes the value of age and wisdom, often not valued in society today. A prayerful retreat designed to touch issues and concerns unique to those in the “gifted” years. This retreat begins with supper at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday. It is an honor to have Bishop James Garland as our guest director assisted by Fr. Jamie Ziminski. Fee: $75 for a single person, $135 for a married couple.

For more information or to register for these retreats go online at www.marygrove.org or call 906-644-2771.
