Dear Friends in Christ,

I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July.

I was sent this and thought this is a good time to share it with you.  I don’t know who wrote it.  As you read it think about it and say a prayer for our troops every day.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

We must never forget who gets the credit for the freedoms we have, of which we should be eternally grateful.

I watched the flag pass by one day, it fluttered in the breeze.  A young Marine saluted it, and then he stood at ease.  I looked at him in uniform.  So young, so proud, with hair cut square, and eyes alert he’d stand out in any crowd.

I thought how many men and women like him had fallen through the years.  How many died on foreign soil?  How many mother’s tears?  How many pilots’ planes shot down?  How many died at sea?  How many foxholes were soldiers’ graves?  NO, liberty is not free.

I heard the sound of Taps one night, when everything was still; I listened to the bugler play and felt a sudden chill.  I wondered just how many times Taps played meant “AMEN”.

When a flag had draped a coffin of a brother and a friend.  I thought of all the children, of the mothers and the wives, of fathers, sons and husbands with interrupted lives.

I thought about the graveyard at the bottom of the sea.  Of unmarked graves in Arlington.  NO, freedom is not free.

Enjoy the freedom our troops provide for you every day and God bless our troops.

Fr. George

P.S.  Please remember we are still in need of your meatless recipes for our LENTEN COOK BOOK.
