The Diocese of Marquette is conducting a professional feasibility study for a possible diocesan-wide capital campaign to benefit parishes and Catholic schools. Representatives of the consulting firm, Guidance in Giving, Inc. will visit with every pastor and pastoral coordinator as well as conduct a limited number of interviews and direct mail surveys of lay and religious across the diocese. Anyone who wishes to learn more or participate in the study can visit www.dioceseofmarquette.org to read the preliminary case statement and complete an on-line survey from April 28 through May 16, 2008.  Look for a red color link on the lower right side of the website’s home page.  The study will provide Bishop Sample with an objective assessment of how diocesan needs are perceived by the people and a realistic appraisal of the financial potential in the Diocese of Marquette. Study results will be presented to Bishop Sample at the end of May.

Dear Friends in Christ,

Consider the story of a lawyer who lived 500 miles away from her elderly father.  They had not seen each other in a number of months.  The father calls her up and asks, “When are you going to visit?”  The daughter proceeds to tell him about the demands on her time, her court schedule, meetings, and so on and so on, everything that prevented her from visiting.

So the father says, “I’ve been wondering about this for some time now.  When I die, do you intend to come to my funeral?”  The lawyer responds, “Dad!  I can’t believe you’d ask that.  Of, course I’d come to the funeral.”  The father replies, “Good.  Let’s make a deal.  Forget the funeral.   Need you more now than I will then.”

(from: A World of Stories for Preachers and Teachers)

So often we get so busy in our daily lives that we forget the ones we love.  There is always something getting in the way of our visits, something that always seems more important.  Is there someone that you need to visit before it is too late?

Do you need to tell someone what a special friend they are, how much you love someone, what they mean to you, need forgiveness from someone.  Don’t wait until it is too late.  If you have something to say to someone and have not gotten around to it yet there is no time like the present to do it.  You will love yourself for it.  Do it now before it becomes too late.

Remember your family and friends need you more while they are alive then when you show up for their funeral.

Fr. George

An article about the need for parents and parish elders to become students and educators in the faith is the last of a four-part series in the U.P. Catholic that details Bishop Alexander Sample’s New Vision for Faith Formation and Education in the diocese. The article appears in this weekend’s issue of the newspaper, and the endire series is available at the diocese’s web site, www.dioceseofmarquette.org
